Why is it always so crazy on the days Nicholas turns another month older?? Once again I was not able to take both the 'month old' pictures I wanted to. This time... Nicholas was the sick one! Good thing we atleast took some pictures in the morning. By the middle of the afternoon he had spiked a 102.5 degree temp which the pediatrician suggested was when we should head to the hospital. Nicholas has now had his first IV, first urinalysis (I had no idea it would be done with a catheter) and his first x-ray. In fact the poor little guy had to be catheterized twice since they couldn't get any urine the first time! Thank goodness Dan was there - he had to hold Nicholas down for all the tests while I cried in the corner. The doctor said he had an elevated white blodd cell count but didn't have an ear infection, UTI or blood infection which is why they did the chest x-ray to make sure they weren't missing anything. They decided to do an anitbiotic thru his IV anyways since it was already in to give him fluids.
We had to return to the emergency room again Sunday for another injection of antibiotics just to be on the safe side. We had expected it to be a quick trip based on what the doctor told us on Saturday, but Nicholas' temp was up to 103.5 so it was a longer process than expected. More test results were back though and he still didn't have an ear infection or UTI and he tested negative for any type of flu virus - THANK GOODNESS. So they decidced to still give him the antibiotics even though they believe it is a virus. We were told to put him on Tylenol every 4 hours and Mortin every 6 hours which was the trick to get rid of his fever finally. Unfortunately he has had a bought of the runs now but the pediatrician said it's probably from the antibiotics. Apparently the dosage and type of anitbiotic given at the hospital was enough to knock out an ear infection in one dose.... so two back to back dosages must have been tough.
So Nicholas has been spoiled even more the past few days with lots of love from Mom and Dad since he has been so miserable. He has come to love to sleep on our chests every night again.... something we haven't had to do in a couple of months. So now that his fever seems to be gone tonight.... it's 'tough love' to try to get him to go back to sleep in his crib at night so mommy and daddy can get some sleep too! I swear I don't know how people do it..... mom and dad work AND have a sick baby equals complete exhaustion!!! And never a chance to catch back up even when we take turns at night! So here is a special shout out to all those families with working moms and dads.... and an even bigger shout out to single parents!! WE ARE ALL AMAZING PEOPLE!! Every morning I wake up wondering how I will make it thru another day of trying to be the best mom, best employee, best wife....... and every night I feel exhausted but fulfilled with the wonderful life I have been given and how great of a day it was.
So enough of the mushy stuff :) Here is Nicholas' 5 month picture....
